Carpathia Bike Tour opens registration for its III edition

An extended route and the opportunity to experience life in the Transylvanian Hills

The Carpathia Bike Tour, an event organised by Foundation Conservation Carpathia and COBOR Biodiversity Farm, invites cycling and nature lovers to its 3rd edition on 8th June 2024. This year’s event features an extended route and the opportunity to experience life in the Transylvanian Hills. The event promotes cycling and biodiversity as well as highlighting the history and culture of local communities.

Participants are invited to cycle a route of about 80km through the beautifu historic villages of Transylvania, on winding roads through flower-scented hills and cool forests, but also on quiet roads with little traffic. COBOR Biodiversity Farm is where cyclists will stop for lunch, but also in order to discover a ’green’, nature-friendly business that supports community development.

For the first time, the tour will also pass through Viscri, a UNESCO site.

Carpathia Bike Tour 2024, a complex circuit

The tour starts at the Rupea Fortress and continues through Homorod, Ungra, Crihalma, Ticuș before reaching Cobor, where COBOR Biodiversity Farm awaits cyclists with traditional Transylvanian Grey Cattle goulash and other surprises. The route then continues to Jibert, Dacia, Viscri, back to Dacia and Rupea. It ends at the Rupea Fortress.

The route is of medium to high difficulty and can be done on MTB, cross-country or trekking bikes. It is recommended for trained cyclists who have already completed routes of similar length and difficulty. It is compulsory to wear protective equipment for public roads, to respect the rules of the road and to ride at the speed set by the organiser for group rides.

Biodiversity and local communities

The Cobor stop will take cyclists through the history of the oldest Transylvanian village, which was affected by depopulation in the first decades following the 1990s. Here they will visit COBOR Biodiversity Farm, an initiative of Foundation Conservation Carpathia, which boasts Transylvanian Grey Cattle, horses in a sanctuary and Carpathian Shepherd dogs that the Foundation breeds and donates to farmers to prevent conflicts with wild animals. COBOR Biodiversity Farm is located in rural Transylvania, surrounded by high nature value pastures, in a settlement first documented in 1206. It stands out for its sustainable, nature-friendly farming model and its project to reintroduce the Transylvanian Grey Cattle, a historic breed of cattle that is almost extinct in Transylvania.

Tickets can be purchased at iabilet.ro and cost 95 lei.
